We held our first parent workshop for volunteers who would like work and read 1:1 with our Belhamites. During the session, we talked about the key principles of reading as illustrated by Scarborough's Reading Rope and the complexity of the reading process our children go through as they learn to read fluently and with increasing skill. We also discussed strategies for supporting a struggling reader to persevere and use the reliable decoding routines they've learned in class. Finally, we looked through examples of questions to use when reading 1:1 that will help promote understanding and further develop the children's ability to talk confidently about different types of texts. These linked directly to the key reading skills that we teach here at the Belham. You can see the 6 skills in the photo here.
