In Year 6 Spring, children continue to develop the four purposes of writing – to entertain, inform, persuade and discuss. They write to persuade by delivering speeches and creating campaigns that encourage others to take action, using clear viewpoints, emotive language and persuasive techniques to raise awareness and influence thinking. They write to discuss by exploring complex moral questions through balanced arguments that consider different viewpoints, and by writing reviews that reflect on impact, themes and strengths while suggesting improvements.

This term, children will continue to develop the four purposes of writing – to entertain, inform, persuade and discuss.

Using The Children of the Benin Kingdom by Dinah Orji, they will focus on writing to inform by creating non-chronological reports. They will learn how to organise information clearly using headings, paragraphs and subject-specific vocabulary.

After half term, children will explore The Arrival by Shaun Tan. They will write to entertain by creating their own narratives, focusing on description, character and atmosphere to engage the reader.

To understand the use of similes and metaphors in lyric writing and to compose lyrics for a song using symbolic language and conventional song structure. To perform their song and accompany themselves on the ukulele.

Form

Creating Islamic-inspired clay tiles - comparing different styles and approaches (eg. Moore and Aztec, etc), developing awareness of form, shape and space in the world around them, identifying the main feature and practicing motifs in the Kashan style, recognises sculptural forms in the environment: furniture, buildings, etc. and designing and creating a clay tile to form a tessellating display of tiles.
